About the Teaching Artist
Kristin Melkin is a Greenpoint based artist, who believes exposure to art provides children with a critical means for engaging their world. For over twelve years she has been fostering art experiences for students of all ages in a variety of settings, including museums, public schools and non-profit organizations. She currently works as a Teaching Artist for the Guggenheim Museum’s Learning Through Art program, and as a Gallery Educator at the Noguchi Museum. She is also mom to her own toddler artist, and is thrilled to be working with the kids in her neighborhood!
Some things that make ARTLAB classes special:
ARTLAB classes are small and intimate by design to allow relationships to develop, not just between the teaching artist and students, but from student to student and adult to adult. Small class size also allows the teaching artist to plan and develop lessons specifically for the little artists participating in any given session.
Art is part of life, and as such, we believe art exploration becomes richer when it happens within a larger context. For the littlest artists, this may be a sensory activity or sorting game that relates to the art project at hand; for older students this could involve looking at works of art by others, or telling stories about their own artistic choices.
While ARTLAB classes focus on process rather than product, careful consideration goes into materials selection for each class. High quality materials produce a high quality experience – heavy paper stands up better to a little artist’s process; and while premium tempera stains clothing, it creates much more vibrant colors when mixed than washable paints. All of the materials we use are non-toxic, and often homemade, with an emphasis on natural ingredients and re-purposed items.
Our goals include introducing parents and caregivers to new materials and ideas, and providing you with an environment to engage your little artist in ways you may not get to every day, whether it be building a fantastic new creation, or just plain old getting messy. ARTLAB is constantly evolving, and your feedback is an important aspect of our planning and programming. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or comments.
ARTLAB is a place for young artists, ages 1-4, to explore and discover their visual world, and experiment with their own creative powers. Our classes are carefully structured to create an open-ended and child-centered experience, where your little artist interprets and engages every activity in his or her own way.
